In a report from FOX 13 Tampa, Sarasota County School District’s use of artificial intelligence to enhance school safety is in the spotlight. The district is implementing Omnilert Gun Detect across its campuses to detect potential gun threats and prevent incidents before they occur.
Following a successful pilot at one of the district’s high schools, Sarasota County Schools Superintendent Terry Connor announced a commitment to expanding Omnilert’s technology across all 4,800 cameras in the district, adding a proactive layer of security for students and staff. “Using our safety and security protocols coupled with technology like this AI on our camera system helps us to respond very quickly,” said Connor.
Omnilert’s CEO, David Fraser, explained that the Gun Detect AI system is designed with one purpose: detecting visible guns in video feeds. Capable of recognizing a firearm in under a second, the technology often reacts faster than the human eye. Once detected and verified, alerts are instantly sent to local law enforcement and school officials to start response protocols. “The system goes into a set of procedures, including notifying the police and activating other safety systems, like alarms and mass notifications,” Fraser shared.
