Municipalities across Florida are working to improve public safety, reduce liability exposure, and protect employees and citizens. To help with that, the Florida Municipal Insurance Trust (FMIT) offers the Matching Safety Grant, a reimbursement program to fund safety upgrades across public facilities, vehicles, infrastructure, and operational environments.
According to the program summary, the grant is only available to FMIT members participating in the Workers’ Compensation and/or Property/Liability Insurance Programs.
About the FMIT Matching Safety Grant
The Matching Safety Grant provides Florida public entities with 50% reimbursement for eligible expenses on a wide range of equipment, tools, technologies, and training to reduce risk and prevent injuries. Depending on premium range and lines of coverage, municipalities may receive up to $6,000 in reimbursement per policy year (for premiums greater than $200,000 with two lines).
Applications for the 4th quarter are due on December 31, 2025.
One of the best parts of this program is the broad eligibility. FMIT supports both technology-based and traditional safety upgrades, from surveillance systems and access control to ergonomic tools, PPE, emergency communications, playground improvements and more. This allows each municipality to prioritize the solutions that are most relevant to their facilities and safety challenges.
Eligible Expenses
The program covers many types of municipal upgrades, including security cameras and surveillance systems, threat detection technologies, burglar and access control systems, emergency lighting and generators, medical alert devices, law enforcement communication tools, ADA compliant equipment, sidewalk or playground safety upgrades, PPE, first aid kits, traffic control devices and other measures to reduce exposure to injuries or losses.
Using Omnilert AI Gun Detection with FMIT Funding
For organizations looking at advanced safety technologies, Omnilert’s AI Gun Detection is a proactive, automated system that can detect a visible weapon the moment it appears on camera. The solution combines AI detection with human verification and automated emergency responses to help communities speed threat awareness and reduce response times.
Since Omnilert is a specialized safety technology, PRE-APPROVAL IS REQUIRED for reimbursement eligibility under the FMIT Matching Safety Grant. This ensures alignment with FMIT guidelines and proper documentation before your municipality submits the application.
Building a Safer Community with FMIT Support
The FMIT Matching Safety Grant is a great opportunity for Florida cities, counties and special districts to improve safety, reduce risk, and stretch their budgets further. With 50% reimbursement on eligible expenses, up to $6,000 available, and a wide range of eligible safety solutions, including AI-enhanced technologies, municipalities can take meaningful steps to improve their security strategy and operational resilience.
